Mid-Summer Update from New W.F. West Principal, Mr. Curry
Hello Bearcat Families,
I am Craig Curry, the new principal at W.F. West, and I am honored and excited to be in my new role, preparing for the upcoming school year. View the video below for a mid-summer update and for details on upcoming events in August, or read more below.
There’s been a lot of activity at the building this summer, as crews are finishing the installation of solar modules in the parking lot. Our district received a grant to install 425 solar modules across two canopy structures, which will provide some cover for both student and staff parking. It also allows us to meet the state requirements for clean energy standards. Installation is scheduled to be complete before school starts.
I’ve had the honor this summer of seeing our staff continue to provide valuable experiences for students, from summer credit recovery in late June to a Geometry class through July, along with some student trips. Some of our French students took a trip to France, and our leadership students went on a planning retreat to Ocean Shores.
I got to watch some girls and boys summer basketball. There’s also been a tennis camp, weight training, and volleyball open gym sessions going on. In the last week of July, we are hosting a wrestling camp for schools across the region. So many amazing experiences are happening this summer, and there is still more opportunity for summer learning ahead.
From August 3-6, the University of Washington School of Engineering, School of Nursing, and School of Dentistry will be hosting a STEM camp for students from grades 9-12. This is for W.F. West students (or any high school students) who register at stemchehalis.org. The cost is only $25 for all 4 days, and there are also scholarships available if needed. Reserve your spot today!
August 18 is our freshman orientation (we call it Link Day) from 8 a.m. to noon. This event is for students only, so parents please plan to drop off your 9th grader between 8 and 8:30. We look forward to seeing you there, Class of 2030!
The following day, on August 19, is our Readiness Day for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Check Parent Square communication coming in early August for times and details.
Then on Friday, August 28 from 7-8 a.m., join me for the first Coffee with the Principal meeting, where parents and community can get insider updates on the great things happening at W.F. West, ask questions about programs and events, and share what is important to you about your student’s high school experience. Coffee with the Principal will be the last Friday of each month in the W.F. West library.
Finally, on Monday, August 31, from 6-8 p.m. (the evening before the first day of school), the W.F. West staff will host an Open House during which students will get to walk their schedule, meet and interact with teachers, and choose an optional informational session.
Then the first day of school is on September 1. It’s going to be a great year! See you soon.
Go Bearcats!
