A District-Wide Student Achievement Goal

Strive for 5 is one of the ways we’re supporting our district’s 75 by 35 student achievement goal by combatting what is referred to as the Summer Slide. Summer slide is a very real phenomenon referring to the loss of skills and knowledge as students fall out of “practice” in the summer. It costs students and teachers a great deal of valuable learning time every year, time we could be using to advance our stuents’ knowledge and skills.  Some estimates say as much as 20% of the prior year’s learning is lost over the summer months.

Reading for just a few minutes a day – about five books over the summer – can help keep minds busy and skills sharp, so that we can pick up right where learning left off next fall. This year, we’re challenging all students in grades K-12 to join the Strive for 5 Challenge and commit to reading at least five books over the summer. Those who complete the challenge will not only have the satisfaction of knowing they’ll be starting the 2026-2027 school year strong but they’ll also be eligible to win some fabulous prizes.

I’m In! What do I do next?

Participation in Strive for 5 is simple:

  1. Between June 12 and Sept. 1 read at least 5 books – you get to pick the genre and subject, we just ask that the books be at your reading level
  2. Fill out the Strive for 5 form at THIS LINK to tell us a little bit about the books you chose

Where should I get my books from?

If you don’t already own 5 books you’ve been meaning to read, there are a number of places you can access books for no cost to your family:

What is 75 by 35?

Since 2013, the Chehalis School District has been committed to preparing and supporting 100% of our students by cultivating their interests, unlocking their full potential, and guiding them as they align their skills, talents, and purpose with career pathways.

75 by 35 is our district’s newest student achievement goal. By the Class of 2035 (the 2026-2027 school year’s 4th graders), we want to see 75% of our graduates go on to earn some sort of post-secondary certificate or degree and 100% of our graduates to feel prepared and supported for their future goals.
