Medical terminology class helps prepare students for healthcare careers

W.F. West High School students are gaining skills that will lead them to a career in the medical field thanks to a medical terminology class taught by Josh Petersen. Petersen, who is also the school’s athletic trainer, is teaching the new class which enables students to earn dual credit. This means that students earn credit toward their high school diploma and also earn college credits than can transfer to a college or university in the future.

The class is fortunate to have the use of a state-of-the-art anatomage table which shows lifelike photo images of the various systems of the human body, including skeletal, muscular, vascular, respiratory, and digestive components. Paid for by funds from a STEM grant along with funds from the Chehalis Foundation and private donors, the table is one of just a handful in operation at high schools in the state. Peterson and his students can use the interactive table to see in depth image of the human body, and are able to see, for example, how blood flows to a particular artery or vein.

“We are so excited to be able to use this table,” said Petersen. “It is going to be a game changer for bringing the concepts we talk about in class to life.”

As part of the class final, students will use the anatomage table to demonstrate their mastery of medical and scientific terms.
According to CTE Director Wendie Balmer, this class offers an important foundation for students who may be interested in pursuing careers as physicians, nurses, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physician’s assistants and more.
