The Chehalis School Board has selected names for two new schools, which will open in
the fall of 2018. The new primary school will be named after James Lintott, and will
serve grades PK-2. The new intermediate school will be named after Orin Smith and
serve students in grades 3-5. The campus, which will house the new schools and include
Chehalis Middle School, will be named after the Shaw family.

In selecting these names, the School Board recognizes several long-standing school
supporters in our community. All three names come from individuals who have shown
tremendous support for Chehalis schools. Orin Smith is a W.F. West Class of 1960
graduate and James Lintott is a W.F. West Class of 1982 graduate. Gail and Carolyn
Shaw were long-time school supporters in Chehalis. “After Gail’s death,” explains
Superintendent Ed Rothlin, “his family donated the property, where the new schools will
be built, to the Chehalis School District. Future generations of students will benefit from
their generosity.”

The School Board voted on the names Tuesday, October 18th, based on the
recommendation of a naming committee comprised of staff, administration, a Board
representative and community members.

Under Board Policy 6970, “Facilities shall only be named for individuals or entities
whose actions and reputation are consistent with furthering the mission and vision of the
School District.”

“Orin and Jim are products of Chehalis and our schools,” said Brennan Bailey, Board
President. “Neither came from wealthy families. They have both achieved enormous
success in their lives through hard work and talent, and they both have chosen to give
back generously to help other young people from Chehalis. These role models have
displayed the qualities we hope to help instill in students here today and in the future. It is
an honor to be able to recognize their legacy in this way.”
