Summer tends to be a time when students forget important math concepts and skills they learned the previous school year. The Chehalis Middle School Summer Math Academy is a FREE summer program intended to maintain and deepen students’ understanding of various math topics and is available for students who will be attending Chehalis Middle School in the 2019-2020 school year. Lunch is available.

The Summer Math Academy is structured into three separate modules:

Module 1: Coding

Classes: July 8th – 11th (9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.)

In addition to several hands-on, non-tech coding activities, students will get to work with a variety of tasks on code.org on Chromebooks, use ipads to code with Apple Swift Playground, code Sphero SPRK robots using ipads, code Ozobots, and try out a variety of other coding products.

Module 2: The Mathematics of Baseball

Classes: July 15th, 17th, & 18th (9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.)
Field Trip: July 16th – Tacoma Rainiers game

Students will study statistics as they learn about batting averages, earned run averages, and the Pythagorean expectation. There will be plenty of opportunities to practice the game of baseball outside as well!

Module 3: The Mathematics of Cars

Classes: July 22nd – 24th (9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.)
Field Trip: July 25th – LeMay Car Museum (Tacoma)

Students will calculate proportions, cost, design, distances, speed, rates, power, and other topics as they study a variety of cars – from old to new, gas-guzzling to electric, big to small, slow to fast, and more!
